Have you ever heard of the Tower of Hercules? If not, it’s a Roman lighthouse built in 14 BC on the coast of Spain. You may be wondering how a place that was built much earlier than some of the other wonders of the world can still be considered a wonder today. Well, it was once one of only two lighthouses in Europe!

The tower was originally constructed to honor Melqart, an ancient Phoenician god who protected Tyre (now known as Beirut) from pirates and foreign invaders. It worked for centuries until an earthquake destroyed half its structure in 956 AD. A second earthquake hit in 1492 and did further damage to this impressive structure.

The tower has been rebuilt several times, but it still stands today. It’s a wonderful example of ancient civilizations’ impact on modern technology.
