Top service
Because Salazar could placate even troublesome diners with ease, the Luby’s managers assigned her a unique challenge: caring for their most difficult regular. Many would balk at the ingrate customer, but adventurous Salazar welcomed the test.
One patron in particular dismayed servers so much, they’d only help him if absolutely necessary. Even easygoing Salazar found this man to be one of the biggest curmudgeons yet. However, she had her reasons for persisting as his long-serving waitress.

The most difficult customer
Walter “Buck” Swords, an 89-year-old World War II survivor, was the dreaded client of Luby. He had a short fuse and a hostile person, so the workers did their best to stay away from him. For years, Buck had been having lunch at Luby’s. He had developed a horrible reputation throughout that period. Eventually, no one was interested in serving him.
Salazar was an anomaly, the only one who could deal with Buck.
