Meteora is a group of monasteries in Greece perched on top of tall rock pillars. Located in the Pindus Mountains, Meteora means “suspended in air” in Greek, and it’s one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations.

Meteora consists of 24 monasteries built on natural sandstone rock pillars between the 9th and 12th century AD. The monks who lived there could reach their homes by climbing ladders or using pulleys/ropes to hoist themselves up or down from one monastery to another.

Meteora is one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The monasteries are accessible by foot or bus from Kalambaka, where you can also find transportation to other parts of Greece and Europe.
